*me mysteriously appears in a puff of smoke*
I learnt something new today.... New Year's Eve is declared as a
University holiday by order of the Dean. 
I can access the lab.... but there are no lab techs to let me in to
the Laser Room, where all my equipment is.
The graduate students have the keys.... but unless they decide to
show up today, I won't be able to do anything.
